Advantages: They are cheap
Disadvantages: They are useless, confusing, misleading
I have used Tesco car insurance for the past 2 years purely on price and promotions they were running. The first year I got a quote, which beat everywhere else, and £50 in petrol vouchers on top. The second year they came out cheap and I did not want the hassle of changing companies.
The first year I was with Tesco everything went really well. I got a cheap quote paid the years insurance had no accidents or claims so no need to deal with them so everything went smoothly.
The second year I lost my car keys and went through a lot of stress and expense. I was shopping in a local town came back to the car and could not find my car keys anywhere retraced my steps check the police station shops etc and no sign. I wonder whether someone stole them out my bag.
I got a bus home and phoned the car insurance to see if I was covered for lost/ stolen keys and they said I was and I would just have to pay my excess if I claimed. So I claimed for lost keys (I only had one set) a recovery truck collected my car and took it to a garage. The next day I got a call from Tesco saying I would be liable for half the cost and they were wrong saying I would just have to pay my excess. Therefore, I went over my options with the Tesco call centre I could either claim and pay half or collect the car and sort it myself. I was told if I collected the car, I would have to pay the bill for the recovery! I was gutted I would not have had them collect the car if I had know that!
after a couple of hours thinking about my options I decided to do it through the insurance as I would get a courtesy car to use and it would be less hassle and cost. Tesco informed me 2 days later that the keys would cost £580 and I would have to pay half. I was very worried about this as the car is an R reg and only worth £800. I phoned the Renault garage to ask how much replacement keys would cost just to check and they said £120 plus £30 labour having them tuned into the car for central locking.
I phoned back Tesco to ask where the price of £580 had come from and I was told the only way to get new keys was to replace all the locks. (Renault said that was complete rubbish and it only needed a new key) I told Tesco that Renault said they could do it for £150 and it just needed new keys. Tesco told me as Renault is not one of the garages they use I would have to have the new locks and keys or deal with it myself! So I abandoned Tesco and sorted out the car myself this landed me with the recovery fee from the garage and £150 for the keys!
I latter sent several letters of complaint to Tesco and was reimbursed half the cost of the keys.
Tesco were a complete pain to deal with put me on hold constantly. The calls to Tesco were also quite expensive and very stressful. Tesco are not clear on there charges and information was very misleading. They are great until you need to claim but them you are in trouble.
Summary: Ok unless you need to claim!
